He was initially appointed to the Department of Sociology, then to the\u00a0Department of History, where he has been teaching since 1989. In 1997, Gingras co-founded the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ost.uqam.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Observatoire des sciences et des technologies<\/a>, where he currently holds the position of scientific director. The OST is an organisation devoted to \u201cmeasuring\u201d science, technology and innovation and affiliated with the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cirst.uqam.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Centre interuniversitaire de recherche sur la science et la technologie<\/a>\u00a0(CIRST). Fifteen years after he began working at the CIRST, he became director of the research centre from 2001 to 2005, at which time gave up the position in order to dedicate himself to the Canada Research Chair in the History and Sociology of Science. After a first term of 2004-2011, the Chair has been renewed for a second term ending in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After having obtained a Masters degree in Physics from the Universit\u00e9 Laval, Gingras completed a doctorate in the History and Socio-politics of Science at the\u00a0University\u00a0of\u00a0Montreal\u00a0in\u00a01984. In\u00a01991, his thesis, entitled,\u00a0<em>Les physiciens canadiens : g\u00e9n\u00e9alogie d\u2019un groupe social, 1850-1950, <\/em>was simultaneously published in French and in English under the title <em>Physics and the Rise of Scientific Research in Canada<\/em>. From 1984 to 1986, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of the History of Science at Harvard University. He returned to the United States in 2000, this time at the\u00a0Dibner Institute for the History of Science and Technology\u00a0at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Dibner Fellow. On several occasions he has held visiting professorships in France, at the \u00c9cole des Hautes \u00c9tudes en Sciences Sociales and the Universit\u00e9 Louis-Pasteur, as well as at the\u00a0University\u00a0of\u00a0Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has written, co-written or edited close to a dozen books, one hundred articles (of which more then half were refereed) and he has given more than two thousand conferences. He has supervised forty or so graduate students, received around the same number of major grants, and has successfully completed around many research contracts. He is on the editorial board of several scholarly journals, and regularly serves as a referee for articles, manuscripts and theses. He has also sat on many evaluation committees and boards of directors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to being a prolific researcher, Yves Gingras is well known for his popularization work. He can be heard regularly on the\u00a0Ann\u00e9es lumi\u00e8re\u00a0radio show (Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Radio-Canada), where he has had a history of science column since 1997. He has also appeared as a commentator on various television shows, and has served as scientific advisor to publishers, production studios, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, several prizes have highlighted the high quality of Yves Gingras\u2019 work. In 1988, the\u00a0Institut d\u2019histoire d\u2019Am\u00e9rique fran\u00e7aise\u00a0awarded him the\u00a0Prix Michel-Brunet\u00a0for his book\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/yvesgingras.uqam.ca\/publications\/histoire-des-sciences-au-quebec\/\">Histoire des sciences au Qu\u00e9bec<\/a><\/em>, co-written with Luc\u00a0Chartrand\u00a0and Raymond\u00a0Duchesne. The\u00a0British Society for the History of Science\u00a0selected him as the 2001 recipient of the Ivan Slade Prize, which rewards the best critical contribution to the history of science, for his essay \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/yvesgingras.uqam.ca\/publications\/what-did-mathematics-do-to-physics\/\">What Did Mathematics Do to Physics?<\/a>\u201d. In 2005, he was awarded the\u00a0Prix G\u00e9rard-Parizeau\u00a0\u201cin recognition of his exceptional work and his commitment to the promotion of the vast and complex field of history of science in\u00a0Quebec\u201d. In 2007, the\u00a0Association francophone pour le savoir<em>\u00a0<\/em>(ACFAS) awarded him the\u00a0Prix Jacques-Rousseau. Since 1980, this award has been given to scientists whose accomplishments have gone beyond their respective disciplines or areas of specialization, and who have successfully bridged the gap between different fields.
